Begin Holy Week in San Miguel with a masterful concert by the Choir of Madrigalistas of Bellas Artes, Mexico City, conducted by John Daly Goodwin. The concert will take place Sunday, March 25 at 5:00PM at the Angela Peralta Theater.
The Madrigalistas will perform this program on March 18 and 23 at Bellas Artes in Mexico City. The Festival de Música de Cámara is proud to bring it to San Miguel as the first concert of its 40th Anniversary Festival 2018.
The first selection on the program is the choral work Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein (1918-1990), commissioned by the Chichester Cathedral in Sussex, England. Following its premier in 1965 by the New York Philharmonic, the hopeful, life-affirming work immediately entered the standard repertoire and is performed regularly around the world, especially in this centenary year of Bernstein’s birth. Each of the work’s three movements includes a complete psalm paired with related excerpts from another. Sung in Hebrew, Chichester Psalms has been described as being tuneful, tonal and contemporary, featuring modal melodies and unusual meters resulting in what Bernstein called “an old-fashioned sweetness.”
Completing the concert is the Requiem Mass by French composer Maurice Duruflé (1902-1986) recognized as one on the gentlest and most beautiful settings of the Requiem text ever to have been written. Duruflé’s music is distinguished by his use of Gregorian Chant, often quoted directly and at other times used for its melodic contours and harmonic implications. The result is a work of enduring popularity with singers and audiences around the world.
The Madrigalistas Choir of Bellas Artes is celebrating its 80th Anniversary, having been founded in 1938 by Luis Sandi with the aim of spreading choral music in all its forms. It has performed in numerous concerts and festivals in Mexico and the United States, conducted by Sandi and other famous conductors.
John Daly Goodwin, who after a distinguished career of thirty-one years in New York has established himself as a conductor in Mexico, will conduct the Choir. Maestro Goodwin has recently conducted performances with many of the leading orchestras and choruses in Mexico City, as well as collaborating with a host of noted conductors.
From 1987 to 2012 he served as Music Director of the New York Choral Society, leading this respected symphonic chorus in numerous concerts in Carnegie Hall and at Lincoln Center. He has also conducted performances in the People’s Republic of China, the Czech Republic, Israel, Austria, France, Italy, Greece and Mexico.
Tickets are available at the Angela Peralta box office and online at the Festival website www. festivalsanmiguel.com Ticket prices are 600, 450 and 200 pesos.
