“Stage anxiety in musicians in training is one of the main problems that this population group must face in their daily practice. Regarding the study of this problem in the Spanish educational field, it has hardly received attention from the research community. With a sample of 479 Higher Education Music students in Spanish schools, around 39% of the population reached anxiety levels above the theoretical average according to the questionnaire specifically designed to assess performance anxiety in musicians. We believe that a pedagogical reflection is necessary to implement adequate curricular training plans aimed at reducing these rates of performance anxiety. (Zarza, F.J., Casanova, Ó. & Orejudo, 2016)”

The San Miguel de Allende Chamber Music Festival is pleased to launch the Academic Program "The Conscious Musician" for advanced degree students. This festival's mission is to contribute to innovative educational programs for the development of students in Mexico. In the first edition of the Academic Program "The Conscious Musician," the festival is honored to collaborate with musical institutions in Mexico, and students from these institutions will receive a full scholarship to participate in this educational program.

“The Conscious Musician Program is the missing component to the classical music curricula out there”.

Yegee Lee, violinist. M.Mus,

Guildhall School of Music, London.

The general learning principles, which are based on metacognition and discovery learning, of the Conscious Musician methodology are:

1. Objectives and content aimed at developing a healthy and creative relationship in musicians with their musical instrument, with music and with the stage, through metacognitive mental, emotional, and physical processes.

2. The consideration of each musician holistically, i.e., as a unique individual with their own mental, emotional, and physical capacities.

3. Attention to the importance of physical fitness as a basis for an effective and solid technique and for the development of the relationship between music and movement.

4. Conscious emotional development and the generation of heart coherence in relation to the pieces the students play through the heart intelligence techniques of the HeartMath Institute.

5. The ability to solve any problem while playing on the mental level through metacognitive strategies.

6. Development of musicians’ creative capacity to develop their creative competencies when playing their instrument.

7. A transformation of the musician’s relationship with the stage. To this end, the techniques outlined above need to be applied by musicians in a disciplined manner so that they can express their full musical and artistic potential in their performances in public.

8. Interaction with other artistic disciplines to enhance the creativity and stage performance competencies of the students.

“Every problem either musical or technical has to be solved first at the mental level”

Derbez, 2015.
