Anthony McGill, clarinet

August 12 and 13 with the Gryphon Trio

Anthony McGill is currently the principal clarinetist of the New York Philharmonic. McGill was also a principal clarinetist of the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. In performances, critics have noted his “. . .brilliance, penetrating sound, and rich sound” (The New York Times).

Originally from Chicago, Illinois, McGill attended the Curtis Institute of Music and is an instructor at the Peabody Institute at John Hopkins University. McGill, who received the prestigious 2020 Avery Fischer Prize, is one of only a handful of African American musicians to hold a principal position with a major orchestra.
