San Miguel was named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2008. This old-world-style small city is nestled in the Sierra Madre Mountains at an elevation of 6,000 feet. It is world-renowned for its rich architectural beauty, warm people and lively arts community. Year-round temperatures keep the days warm and nights just cool enough for a sweater.
Most of San Miguel's highlights including restaurants, stores and galleries are clustered around the compact 'centro' area, making it a very walkable city. Strolling cobblestone streets, you'll see: the Parroquia, our pale pink main church; the Jardín, our flower-filled central square; the renowned Instituto Allende art academy; the Bellas Artes school of fine arts housed in a former convent cloister (home of our Mexican Student Musicians Program), artisan markets, art studios and boutique shops, and excellent restaurants offering everything from home-cooked Mexican to gourmet Continental.
Of course during the Festival, the streets are alive with the sound of music and you will find advanced level student groups playing in public places in the late afternoons.
